What an overly-elaborate way to tell me to just be myself.

"Unfortunately there can be no doubt that man is, on the whole, less good than he imagines himself or wants to be. Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. If an inferiority is conscious, one always has a chance to correct it. Furthermore, it is constantly in contact with other interests, so that it is continually subjected to modifications. But if it is repressed and isolated from consciousness, it never gets corrected."

I agree, well it depends on what one refers to as good as in a political or indeed often moral sense this can be a matter of perspective. However we are all human and humans for the most part don't like to see or course suffering to other humans and they like to help others.

I agree partially with you, but i don't think that someone's faulty upbringing alone can make them evil.
I think that Man is naturally evil and that there is no real getting rid of it, the only way to better yourself is by understanding it and overcoming.
I agree that most "bad" people can be redeemed if they are willing to come to understanding of their inherit evils.

>Man is good, but is only conditioned to be evil or selfish.
I find that proposition hard to believe. From everything I've read and observed, it seems it's a complex calculation with a negative result.

On one hand, affective relations, learned morality and the evolutionary advantage of ethnocentrism give every man some basis of good in his heart. On the other hand, empirical observation through all of history seems to have reached a consensus codified in culture and religion -that Man has an inherent tendency towards evil.

The result is that the average person is selfish, hypocritical and cowardly, but not completely despicable and even capable of noble pursuits at times. Saintlike individuals, whose devotion to learned principles is strong, and the genuinely evil, who don't care about principles, are minorities.

I generally distrust the "Man is inherently good" rhetoric because its proponents are likely to engage in or at least endorse social engineering and experimentation.

This.
Because of me, one of my friends has an anime figure collection and another uses GNU/Linux as his main OS.

At least I know I can influence people somewhat.
